You're getting away to the mountains. You've already pictured it in your mind. But you haven't decided which mountains. They have to be grand, awe-inspiring, wide-open and glistening under a big blue sky. Sounds like Big Sky, Montana. It's one of the last places in the Rocky Mountain West that remains uncrowded and surrounded by vast regions of unspoiled wild lands. Can you picture it? Big Sky can.
Billings   -   City of Billings   -   Billings Convention & Visitors Bureau
The Mountain Crows valued the area that came to be known as the Clark's Fork Bottom as a traditional hunting and gathering site because of its abundant game, good water and wild fruit; the trees at the base of the Rimrocks were sacred as a burial site. The recorded history of Billings begins in 1877, when a trading post and stage station called Coulson, after the local steamship manager, were established near what is now known as Alkali Creek. In 1882, the area was surveyed by the Northern Pacific Railroad and renamed after Frederick Billings, a former president of the Northern Pacific.

You can see it in the smooth, worn streets, the billboard images ghosted on brick hotels, the headframes that mark entry into what was once the "Richest Hill on Earth." After the Custer Massacre in 1876, the US Military created forts in eastern Montana including one where the north-flowing Tongue river flowed into the east-flowing Yellowstone river. Fort Keogh (named after one of the massacre victims) started as a few rough winter cabins, but grew into a moderate sized western fort, from which its commander, Nelson Miles, effectively brought the remaining "uncontrolled" native Americans into subjugation during the last decade of the 1800s.

The area at the headwaters of the Missouri River and surrounding the town of Three Forks has some of the most colorful legends and early-day history of any place in Montana.
  Virginia   -   Virginia City Chamber
The very much alive ghost town, Virginia City, Montana, is frozen in time. It is a remarkably well preserved old west Victorian gold mining town just 20 miles west of Yellowstone National Park (90 miles by road). When the gold ran out, there was still enough left so that homes and businesses were occupied, but there was not enough wealth to remodel the buildings. So it froze, and now represents the whole Victorian era. It is the true and original Old West. It is a gem, held within an incredibly rich area of natural beauty, recreation and history.
West Yellowstone   -   West Yellowstone Montana Chamber of Commerce
West Yellowstone is a rustic mountain town nestled between National Forest lands and Yellowstone National Park. The area is filled with watchable wildlife, breathtaking views and activities for people of all ages. Within the world's First National Park, ten thousand thermal features and 2 1/2 million acres of nature's best offer days of exploration, adventure and learning. Restored gold mining towns, the fascinating 1959 Earthquake area and two National Forests provide the backdrop for even more fun.
