MacKay - MacKay City Council - Stadtverwaltung
Located about halfway between Brisbane and Cairns, Mackay truly is the Heart of Queensland. This coastal
city of over 78,000 residents is positioned 400 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn, with its boundaries extending from Alligator Creek in the south to the O'Connell River in the north.
Mackay is a friendly, unspoiled, tropical city set beside the wide, blue Pioneer River. Famous as Queensland's
'sugar city' and an important regional service centre, Mackay is rightfully attracting increasing numbers of
visitors seeking a distinct, laid-back contrast to the 'built environment' of the well-known resort areas in
Queensland. The city is well stocked with visitor accommodation, services and amenities. 'Must-see's' include
the impressive Mackay Marina, the excellent beaches, the ambient, palm-shaded city centre, the modern Entertainment Centre, Artspace Mackay and Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens.
Mackay is the largest sugar producing area in Australia and is home to several sugar mills, one of Australia's four sugar refineries and the largest bulk sugar terminal in the world.
The city is also a vital service centre for the mines of the nearby Bowen Basin, which produce 85 per cent of the state's coal.
MacKay - MacKay Region - Herz Queensland
The Mackay Region is an idyllic, unspoiled area of Central Queensland, stretching westwards from the Great
Barrier Reef over tropical lowlands, across the green mountain ranges and west into the Outback.
Mackay Region makes an ideal holiday stopover, short break escape or meeting place for business, set
midway between Brisbane and Cairns, with Mackay city easily accessible by Qantas and Jetstar and Virgin
Blue airlines, QRail's new Tilt Train and Sunlander, express bus lines Greyhound, McCafferty's and Premier,
car or campervan along Queensland's prime coastal trunk route - the Bruce Highway. An alternative route into
the region is by the Great Inland Way via Emerald, Clermont and the Peak Downs Highway. Over 200 km of largely deserted coastline provide endless superb beaches, punctuated by estuaries and
creeks offering fabulous fishing opportunities. Offshore beckon intriguing islands, including Brampton, Lindeman and Keswick, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Nord Queensland - Townsville Online This diverse region centres on the cities of Townsville and Thuringowa, and extends north to Mission Beach,
south to the Burdekin, west to Charters Towers and includes the off shore islands of Magnetic, Dunk, Hinchinbrook, Orpheus and Bedarra.
The North Queensland region offers a myriad of experiences for the visitor - from the Great Barrier Reef and
its scattering of tropical islands through to the historic outback and the lush rainforests, waterfalls, national
parks and world heritage listed areas to the north. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, the scene is perfectly set to fully experience this diverse and exciting region at your own pace
Outback Queensland - The Outback
This vast, rugged region is what many people consider the 'real' Australia. The world's oldest surviving
culture, those of the Aboriginal people, have existed here for at least 60,000 years. Footprints of dinosaurs can still be found in rocks of the semi-desert regions.
'he Outback' region of Queensland is larger than the entire State of Texas. It has to be this big so that the
emus (flightless birds standing 6-feet tall in their bare feet) and equally tall red kangaroos, can roam about. Individual cattle stations (ranches) are measured in hundreds of square miles.
It's so quiet you can hear the bloke next to you think! Whether you stay on a ranch, in a country pub, or a
modern motel, you'll meet some great Australian characters. Visit with opal fossickers, take a 4WD adventure
into the 'Crocodile Dundee' territory of the Gulf region, and discover where 'Matilda' was first waltzed (and why)

The Torres Strait Islands are a unique part of Australia and unlike any other part of this vast country. It is an
archipelago of small islands between Cape York, the northern point of the Queensland land mass and the
south coast of Papua New Guinea, stretching about 120 km from north to south and around 150 km north eastwards to the northern outliers of the Great Barrier Reef.
The islands, ranging in size from Prince of Wales Island (Muralag), with a diameter of roughly 23 km to tiny
coral sand islets less than a hectare in area. The larger islands have permanent inhabitants, the mainly
Melanesian Torres Strait Islanders, a people related to the inhabitants of nearby Papua New Guinea, with
whom they share many cultural traits. An exception is the Kaurareg people of Muralag (Prince of Wales)
Island, Hammond and Horn Island who share certain cultural traits and identify with the Aboriginal groups of nearby Cape York.
