Buses travel between all major towns and cities - the type of bus may vary between a converted pickup truck, a flat bed truck with benches or a more modern traditional bus, Fares are always reasonable - but times of departure and travelling times will vary a lot.   Be patient, and allow plenty of time when travelling by bus.

Fähren ab Luang Prabang
Ferry boats run from Vientiane to Luang Prabang v.v. as well as from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai and back. Journeys can take several days, depending on the time of year - and whether travelling up or down river. This kind of travel is for the experienced only! Whilst cramped, hot and lengthy - it is one of the most interesting ways of touching the Lao lifestyle.

Roads
Road access is possible from neighboring countries. Between Thailand and Laos the border can be crossed at Houeixay in Bokeo province, at Mittaphab Friendship Bridge near Vientiane and at Dan Savannakhet Province. China can be reached by road at Boten in Luang Namtha Province. Border Crossing between Laos and Vietnam have been set up at Laksao on the road No.8.Borikhamsay Province and at Dan Savannakhet Province no the road No. 9

Vientiane is located on the bank of the Mekong river which forms the lifeline of the country. The city is full of surprises. The city's exotic Eurasian setting fascinates most travelers. Here you can find fields of rice and vegetables, agriculture hidden behind tree lined avenues. French Colonial architecture sits next to gilded temples. Freshly baked French bread is served next to shops selling noodle soup.

The most southeastern tip province of Laos; sharing borders with Sekong in the north, Champassack in the west,Vietnam in the East and Cambodia in the South. The province has a total population of around 87,700; consists of five districts: Saysettha, Sanamxay and Phouvong. The town is built in a large valley surrounded by mountains and also in the loop of the river, opposite the confluence of the Sekong and Sekhamane Rivers. Where the join an island is formed by a small arm of water connecting them upstream.

Huaphanh province, a mysterious, beautiful and abundant land, is situated in the North East of Laos, bordered by Xieng Khuang and Luangprabang to the west and Vietnam to the east.It was the best of the Lao people's Revolutionary activities and especially the historic interest as the geographical heart of the liberation struggle. The province has a total population of around 247,300; consisting of many ethnic groups, each with their own life styles, costumes, folkways in wedding and other ceremonies, festivals, folkdances and songs, differing from each other.Huaphanh has six districts: Viengxay, Xamnuea, Xamtai, Viengthong and Huamuang. The principle town is Viengxay the former name know as Nakai, according to the former time this area had many of birds, reptiles, wild animals.

Khammouane is situated in the central part of Lao PDR with an area of moderately high mountains sloping down to the Mekong valley. Fertile land here is well suited to plantations of rice, cabbage, sugar cane, bananas etc.

Luang Prabang is situated at the confluence of the Khan and Mekong rivers. It is the ancient capital city of the Lane Xang Kingdom. According to legend, its first later it was known as Xieng Thong. In recognition of the city's vast array of Lao monuments and its historic and culturally significant setting, UNESCO declared Luang Prabang as a World Heritage Site in 1995.

Geschichte Laos

Unabhängig von Frankreich:  19 Juli 1949

Die Wurzeln des heutigen Laos führen ins 14. Jahrhundert, als Fa Ngum das Königreich Lan Xang, das Reich der Millionen Elefanten, gründete. Das Königreich umfasste das gesamte heutige Laos, sowie das heutige Nordthailand und Teile Myanmars. Es erreichte im 17. Jahrhundert unter König Sulignavongsa seine Glanzzeit, in welcher bemerkenswerte Kulturgüter, vor allem in Literatur und Dichtung, geschaffen wurden. Handel und Bildung erreichten in dieser Zeit ein hohes Niveau. Das Lan-Xang-Königreich existierte bis ins 18. Jahrhundert und zerfiel dann in drei rivalisierende Dynastien: Luang Prabang, Vientiane und Champasak. Sehe Wikipedia.
